Book 2

#96: Be Doing

As soon as the Israelites crossed over the Jordan, they were to commemorate the accomplishment by setting up stones in the form of an alter as a physical reminder of all that God had done for them and a reminder of his commandments.

Deuteronomy 27:4 Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, which I command you this day…

Deuteronomy 27:7-8 And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and shalt eat there, and rejoice before the LORD thy God. And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.

What if you were to do the same thing; build an altar of stones that would represent all that the Lord has done for you? Upon looking at it, others could tell how great your God is.  They would know his commandments and they would also know his love for them.  This altar of stones would confirm many truths about the Lord to the observer.  It would also be a place for conversations about the Lord would begin.

“What does this stone represent?”

“Oh! That one is when the Lord led me to help a lame man until he could get back on his feet.”

“What about this one?”

“Well, that was when the Lord answered a prayer and gave me direction.”

Now, I know that the Lord does not want you to start construction on a great stone monolith for him.  But what he does want you to do is live a life that is your memorial to him. You can build a grand memorial to him daily in the things you DO.  The greatest memorial and testament to his commandments is found in how you act, in how you live your life, and in your willingness to reach out to others.  The memorial to God is built by what you DO.  Psalm 82:3-4 tells you to, “Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.” God needs you to be his hands and you memorialize him through your willingness.

Building your memorial to the Lord starts with the heart and ends in your actions.  Great actions cannot come out of a bitter disposition. In essence, your actions are the physical manifestation of your spirit condition.  If you want to build a great memorial to your Lord by what you DO, then you have to first take heed to your spirit.  Being healthy spiritually gives you the proper foundation to build a grand memorial for the Lord through your actions.

Start building your memorial with obedience.  Are there things that you know the Lord has told you to stop, and you haven’t yet?  Are there things that you know the Lord has told you to do, and you haven’t started yet?  Now is the time. Just do it. Every Christian has a call to create disciples for the Lord. You are to introduce others to him.  What you are doing will either draw others to him, or turn them away.  You can have astounding knowledge of the Lord, but what you do will ultimately be the element that has an impact on someone’s life.  Do right.  It matters.  With everything you DO, you are adding to your memorial for your Lord.

In Acts, Paul wanted to go check up on those he had led to the Lord.

Acts 15:36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

He wanted to make an observation of actions.  Certainly they were going to make sure the brethren were “believing” the right doctrine, but ultimately they wanted to make sure they were acting out the doctrine and living the faith.

Start building something grand and beautiful for the Lord. Your memorial to him will be amazing because every day you will place on another stone by doing something for him.

Proverbs 6:9-10 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

Have a Conversation with God:

Lord, what is stopping me from doing something for you each day?

Lord, what are some things that I can do for you?

Lord, is there something I need to stop doing?

Lord, I want my life to be a living memorial for you. I want people to see you through what I do…
